25 Years of Historical Data for the Foreign Institutional Investors / FPIs in the Indian Market


Foreign Institutional Investors' (FIIs) equity participation in the Indian Stock Market is increasing day by day. FPI (Foreign Portfolio Investors) / FIIs  have increased their investments substantially in the month of March 2019. Although the Domestic Institutional Investors have made their profits in the equity market through Mutual Funds and Financial Institutions, where the FII had a strong come back on its investments in India.

The Bank Nifty and the banking sector had also increased more than 20 percent from the mid of February to March end 2019. This is happened due to the weightage of Foreign Investors. Still, the Automobile, Mid cap and small cap have the opportunity to raise its side in the upcoming days.

In the month of March 2019, the FIIs investments were large as compared to the previous month - February 2019. On that period, the FIIs were the net buyers and the DII stood at net sellers in the equity market.

Last October 2018, the Foreign investors who had taken out from the Indian Market with an amount of Rs. 29,000 Crore and the highest net selling of the year 2018. After that they invested heavily for the past 3 to 4 months.

By the Historical data of FIIs / FPS, it shows that they invested about 13 Crore rupees in the Indian Equity Market in the year of 1992-93. In the next year 1993-94, they had an investment of Rs. 5,127 Crore in the Indian Stock market. The FII had started their investment in the Debt Market in India, by 1996-97 with an amount of Rs. 29 Crore.

In the Indian Market both debt and equity, the FII data shows that predominantly they are investing in the equity and debt market as well. For the year 2008-09, the FII had taken the amount of Rs. 45,811 Crore which is the highest amount in the Indian Market History.

The FII had also taken out their money in the year of 2015-16 with an amount of Rs. 18,000 Crore and in the last year with an amount of Rs. 38,930  Crore rupees(Debt and Equity). You can see that the FIIs /FPIs had taken their investments only in three periods out of the last 25 years.

The highest amount of Rs. 2,77,461 Crore came in the year of 2014-15, which the amount was contributed by the debt market value of Rs. 1,66,127 Crore and Equity market value of Rs. 1,11,333 Crore respectively.
